New tunnel - new excursion opportunities
On December 10th. 2002, a tunnel, 5 kilometres in length, connecting the islands of Streymoy and Vágoy will be officially opened. This will mean an increase in the choice of shore excursions available to cruise passengers. It will take approximately one hour to travel by bus from Tórshavn to Vágoy. From there, a boat-trip of 30 minutes takes passengers to the magnificent bird-island Mykines. Alternatively, it is possible to fly by helicopter from the airport on Vágoy to Mykines – this takes just 10 minutes. One of the great artists of the Faroes is the late Mr. S. J. Mikines, who was born on the island of Mykines. Other attractions on Vágoy include “Kálvalíð” which is one of the oldest houses in the Faroes. It is supposed to have housed the infamous vicar’s widow Beinta (Barbara). Today the house serves as a museum. One of the few Runic stones confirming pre-viking settlement, was discovered in the village of Sandavágur and may be seen in the church there. Løgmaður, the Faroese equivalent to Prime Minister, used to be seated in Sandavágur in days gone by. The islands have excellent lochs for trout-fishing , great opportunities for walking/hiking and the scenery is breathtaking.
